Upcycled Butterfly

Recycle plastic bottles into beautiful butterflies with this diy tutorial

Why buy crafting supplies when you can recycle what you already have? With this diy tutorial, you can make your own beautiful butterfly using a plastic bottle and old nail polish.

You can use this butterfly to decorate a homemade gift, like I did, or as a hair ornament if you glue it to a bobby pin, for example.

If you want to find out how to make your own, keep on reading.

Supplies

This is what you need for this diy tutorial:

  • An empty plastic bottle
  • Sharp scissors
  • Old nail polish
  • Plastic rhinestones
  • Strong glue
  • Wire
  • Beads
  • A sharpie or black permanent marker
  • Pattern making paper (smoking papers will work too, it just needs to be thin paper)

DIY tutorial: Step by step instructions

1. First, cut a piece of the plastic bottle. Make sure the plastic is flat and smooth and there are no indentations or patterns.

2. Then, find a free butterfly clip art (I used my phone) and trace the drawing on the thin paper.

If you are good at drawing, you can draw the butterfly yourself. If not, simply place the thin paper on top of your phone screen, and trace the butterfly.

3. Now, place the butterfly drawing BEHIND the plastic and trace the butterfly with a sharpie or any other black permanent marker.

Easy crafts to do at home: Mini bucket

Find easy crafts to do at home with your kids

I love it when I come up with easy crafts to do at home that look store-bought, like this mini bucket.

After making several pencil holders and bird feeders recycling cans and other household items, I’ve discovered a few simple tips to make them look more polished.

Keep on reading if you want to know what I did.

Materials

This is what you need to make this mini bucket:

  • A clean tuna can
  • Clothespins
  • A hot glue gun (not pictured)
  • Twine
  • Gold spray paint
  • 1 sheet of construction paper
  • One craft foam sheet

Easy crafts to do at home: Instructions

1. Clean your can with soap and water and let dry.

2. Then, pull the clothespin apart. If you are making this with kids you should make sure to do this part yourself.

3. Now, glue the clothespins around the can until the whole surface is covered. Depending on the type of glue that you use for crafting, you’ll have to press the clothespins against the can until the glue sets a bit.

I made the mistake of using super glue the first time around. Don’t do that because you will have to hold the clothespins to the can forever until the glue dries a little bit. Use a hot glue gun instead, it’s easier to apply and it dries in seconds.

If you are making this with kids, you should either glue the clothespins yourself, or supervise your kids carefully to avoid accidents.

Finishing touches

You can get your homemade crafts and gifts to look like you bought them at the store just by adding some simple finishing touches here and there.

1. Once you’ve finished gluing the clothespins around the can and before you paint it, you are going to use your can to draw a circle on a sheet of construction paper. I chose a color similar to the natural finish of the clothespins.

2. Next, cut the circle and glue it to the bottom of the can.

3. Now, spray the bucket with the gold spray paint and let dry.

4. Wrap some twine around the bucket. Use the indentations on the clothespins to help secure it in place. You can also use a few drops of hot glue to secure both ends of the twine.

5. Then, you are going to use the can again to draw a circle on the craft foam sheet. Cut the circle and glue it to the bottom of the can, on top of the construction paper.

You can choose to skip using the construction paper altogether. I used it because it helps adhere the foam sheet to the mini bucket, and to add an extra detail.

6. Last, measure the inside of the mini bucket. You will to measure both the diameter as well as the height.

Following these measurements, cut a rectangle of the craft foam sheet and glue it to the inside of your mini bucket.

And you are all done! I hope you like it, and if you have your own easy crafts to do at home with your kids, post a comment and share your tutorials 😀

Arts and crafts: Crochet teddy bear

Fill your spare time with arts and crafts!

With so many beautiful arts and crafts tutorials out there it’s easy to find inspiration for your homemade gifts.

I came across this teddy bear when I was looking for ideas for a baby toy. My baby nephew’s 1st birthday was coming up, and I wanted to make something special for his first birthday. After all, you only turn 1 once :D!

This teddy bear is very easy to make if you already know how to knit. To find out how you can make your own, keep on reading.

Supplies

  • Fiber fill
  • A yarn needle

Instructions

This teddy bear is not my original pattern, I found it in this amazing website dedicated to all things amigurumi, crochet, and knitsThe pattern is free, which is super nice and generous of the designer, but you may only use it for your own personal arts and crafts projects.

I know there are thousands of free patterns that you can find online for your arts and crafts projects. But there are several reasons why I chose this particular one.

For example, I love that it’s a Picasso bear! Pablo Picasso is probably one of my favorite artists of all times, and not just because I am from Spain. Actually, I find his art very inspirational.

What makes this bear a “Picasso” bear is the shirt; check out this picture of Picasso wearing his iconic stripes.

Another things that I love about this pattern is that you can find it in both English and Spanish, in case you only speak one of the two languages. Así que si no hablas inglés, o si no sabes hablarlo muy bien, todavía puedes tejer el osito siguiendo las instrucciones en español 😀
